According to AIIM's State of the ECM Industry 2011 research, 48% of the respondents say they have multiple ECM/DM/RM systems at their organization. Yet only 7% say they provide a stand-alone Enterprise Search as their main strategy or single point of access to the information in the multiple repositories.
So the 10-year old vision of the magical federated Enterprise Search solution doesn't seem to have materialized. What’s more, most of the market leading Enterprise Search platforms have disappeared in a wave of acquisitions: Verity was Acquired by Autonomy a long time ago, while Autonomy itself has just been acquired by the troubled HP for a huge pile of money. The other major player, FAST Search & Transfer was acquired by Microsoft in 2008 but has been fully integrated in the Sharepoint offering and is no longer available as a stand-alone product.
On the other hand: knowledge workers are losing time more than ever, tracing and identifying information relevant to their work. E-mails, wiki’s, intranets, document repositories, websites and social media platforms just keep adding to the information overload we are all experiencing in our daily job. So the importance of a capable search platform is still a very hot topic.
